Probably the most exact ‘National Holiday’ of them all, today we celebrate National Sausage Pizza Day!

Not cheese.

Not meat lovers.

Don’t you dare even celebrate the pepperoni!!

Nope!  Today we focus solely on pizza of the sausage variety.  Paying homage to the ooey-gooey goodness topped with juicy, well balanced bites containing a pinch of sweetness and just the right hint of herbs.

While there is no recorded origin of this fabulously created (and rather specific) holiday, one can still relish in the history of pizza itself.  Some attribute the Greeks to the beginning of pizza, as they covered their bread with oils, herbs and cheese.  The Romans upped the game by developing a pastry with a sheet of dough topped with cheese and honey, then flavored with bay leaves.

The modern pizza, however, had its beginning in Italy as the Neapolitan flatbread, using only mozzarella cheese.

Regardless of who created it and when… all I know is if I didn’t have to worry about fitting in to my jeans this winter, I’d eat the stuff every single day!

Whether served on a thin or thick crust, sausage pizza can take on a variety of identities.  While Italian sausage may be preferred, I suggest you take a crack at experimentation.  Try smoky sausages such as chorizo or even a kielbasa.  Maybe your best bet would be a visit to Louie’s Custom Meats.  I bet they’ve got a wide variety of sausage options to choose from – and maybe even something you’ve never tried before!  It’s the perfect chance to test and try a homemade sausage concoction.

Or, if you’re like me and like to take the easy route in pizza consumption… order!!  These Chamber members are connoisseurs of the highest pizza quality in our great community.  Each offering a different specialty, favorite, or option for you.  They are all pizza Kings in my book!
