About Clear Lake
A Rich and Colorful History
In the spring of 1852, James Dickirson, a farmer, claimed both the land where Clear Lake now stands and a tract of land east of the community. In 1854, he received a patent from the United States for 134 acres of land in what is now downtown Clear Lake. Working tirelessly, Dickirson turned Clear Lake, Iowa into an oasis for the Midwest.
The beautiful lake is spring-fed, formed by glaciers some 14,000 years ago. Clear Lake has a surface area of 3,684 acres and measures seven miles long and two and one-half miles wide. It boasts amazing beaches for swimming and a large variety of species for fishing.
