After more than 90 years of movies, popcorn and memories, the Lake Theatre has temporarily closed its doors as work begins on a major renovation of the historic downtown Clear Lake landmark. But don’t worry, movie lovers! This isn’t the end of the Lake Theatre, it’s just an intermission.

The building’s entertainment history actually stretches back much further than the movies. Originally built as the Clear Lake Opera House in 1890, it was renovated into a movie theatre following a fire in 1935. Generations of Clear Lakers have since grown up watching movies there, making the single-screen theatre one of downtown’s most recognizable landmarks.

What’s Changing at the Lake Theatre

Owners Aaron and Erin Donaldson purchased the Lake Theatre in 2016 with the goal of preserving it for future generations. In 2025, they established the nonprofit Lake Theatre Inc. to help make a much larger restoration and modernization possible. Renovation plans go well beyond new seats and a fresh coat of paint.

The renovation plans include transforming the former balcony into a second, smaller micro-theatre, expanding the lobby and restrooms, and renovating and upgrading the main auditorium while bringing back its stage. That would allow the Lake Theatre to host not only movies, but concerts, performing arts, educational programs, workshops and other community events. The goal is to create a modern, multi-purpose venue while preserving the history and character that have made the Lake Theatre a Clear Lake tradition for generations.

A $2.4 Million Investment in Downtown Clear Lake

Lake Theatre Inc. launched its renovation campaign with a $2.4 million fundraising goal, and the City of Clear Lake committed to becoming an anchor supporter of the project with a $600,000 forgivable loan investment spread over three years. The project is an investment in both Clear Lake’s history and its future. Restoring this downtown landmark preserves an important piece of the community while enhancing opportunities for year-round entertainment and things to do in Clear Lake.

For a building that began its life as an opera house, bringing live entertainment back to the stage feels especially fitting.
