1856: The First Fourth of July in Clear Lake, Iowa

On July 4, 1856, an estimated 800 people traveled from miles around for Clear Lake’s first Independence Day celebration. According to Mrs. R.R. Noyes — wife of the editor of the Clear Lake Beacon, the first newspaper printed in Cerro Gordo County — the day featured music, a speech by Edward Nichols, proprietor of the local general store, and performances by a local band.

Eight hundred people. In 1856. Even then, Clear Lake understood something lasting: Independence Day is meant to be shared.

1899: A Full-Day Celebration

By 1899, the Fourth of July in Clear Lake, Iowa had grown into a full-day spectacle with a printed program. The schedule included a band, a novelty and trades parade, picnic dinner, foot races, sack races, bicycle races, tug of war, pie eating contests, a “gum scramble,” a concert in the park, a water carnival with music on the lake, and a “Grand Illumination.” That phrase “Grand Illumination” is of course what know today as fireworks over Clear Lake. For more than a century, our shoreline has been the front row and we’ve been lighting up the sky for well over a century.

1976: Bicentennial & Legacy Leadership

When America celebrated its Bicentennial in 1976, Clear Lake marked the occasion in a big way. A special July 4th tabloid from the Clear Lake Mirror Reporter that year prominently featured the Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce, documenting its role in organizing and strengthening the community celebration. The message was clear: Clear Lake merchants celebrate, and the Chamber helps lead the effort.

That spirit of Legacy Leadership continues today. For decades, the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce has coordinated the Fourth of July celebration in Clear Lake, Iowa, working alongside volunteers, city partners, and long-standing collaborators like Evans United Shows to sustain and grow one of the Midwest’s most established lakefront Independence Day traditions. From parade coordination to fireworks logistics over the lake, the Chamber’s role has remained steady: protect the tradition, strengthen the experience, and ensure each generation can claim it as their own.

The faces change, the rides evolve, yet the leadership remains.

The Carnival & The Community

Since 1974, Evans United Shows has brought carnival rides and big midway energy to downtown Clear Lake during the July 4 celebration.
