If you haven’t visited in a little while, you’ll notice something: Clear Lake doesn’t sit still.

While the lake stretches toward spring, projects across the community are taking shape — from new visitor amenities to family attractions and downtown improvements. Here’s a look at what’s in progress right now.

A New Welcome Center for Visitors

Construction is wrapping up on the future Clear Lake Chamber & Welcome Center, a modern, welcoming space designed to better serve travelers, tour groups, and first-time visitors. It will feature expanded visitor resources, business information, and a stronger first impression when you arrive in town. We look forward to welcoming you at the end of May 2026!

Surf District Improvements

The area surrounding the historic Surf Ballroom continues to see enhancements aimed at improving walkability and the overall visitor experience. The new Surf District arch provides a welcoming entrance onto Buddy Holly Place from Hwy 18 into the district that includes the Surf Ballroom and the new Music Experience Center, helping define one of Clear Lake’s most iconic destinations. Next up: The Oaks Hotel breaks ground in Spring 2026, a guitar sculpture is underway near the Surf District arch, and future plans include the placement of bronze statues of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, and Don McLean.

Downtown Revitalization: Wilcox Building

Progress is underway at the Wilcox Building on Main Avenue. Revitalizing this prominent downtown property strengthens the heart of Clear Lake and creates new opportunities for shops, dining, and gathering spaces that visitors love. Stay tuned!

New Playground at the Outdoor Recreation Complex

Families have another reason to explore the Outdoor Recreation Complex! An awesome new playground is ready for fun, adding even more space for kids to play while parents relax or catch a game nearby.

Pickleball Shelter Addition

Pickleball has quickly become a favorite pastime for locals and visitors alike. The nearly complete new shelter next to the pickleball courts will provide shade and seating, making it easier to spend an entire afternoon enjoying the game, courtesy of the energetic Clear Lake Pickleball Club.

Ventura Bike Trail Improvements

Work continues on the East Lake Street Recreational Trail in Ventura, making the lake lap even safer for cyclists, walkers, and runners. Located between Venetian Village and Iowa Regular Baptist Camp across from the northeast shore of Clear Lake, the trail will open this summer as long as the weather cooperates!

Future Home for the North Iowa Children’s Museum

Another exciting milestone for locals and families visiting Clear Lake! The North Iowa Children’s Museum has officially purchased land for its future permanent home at 2405 15th Avenue North (behind Culvers & Microtel Inn). The location offers excellent visibility from the interstate, easy access for traveling families, and room to grow for generations to come. The future museum will feature hands-on exhibits and interactive experiences designed to ignite imagination and inspire learning through play, creating a space where children can explore, create, and discover. While construction is still ahead, this land purchase marks a major step forward, turning years of planning and community support into a place that will soon inspire the next generation.
