Having all the Summer Fun!

BY: RACHEL WUMKES

Well friends, the first full week of summer is under our belt, and it was fabulous.  Sometimes the fact that I live in paradise really smacks me in the face.  You just can’t beat all the sun and fun here at the Lake.

After coming down from the incredible high of crossing the finish line at TRI Clear Lake, it was the perfect opportunity for some lake time to recover.  Boating, swimming and dusting off my paddleboard skills made for the perfect weekend.  City Park was filled with happy families having picnics and enjoying time together.  Happy squeals floated through the air as children ran through the splash pad.

It was simply perfection.

The workweek didn’t slow anyone down, either.

The City of Clear Lake has been on a community betterment roll this week.  New trees went in along Main Avenue.  They are a beautiful addition to the new street, and I can’t wait to watch them grow and flourish over the years.  They also added stylish new picnic tables to the charming alleys downtown!  The enhancement of these public community spaces is just the icing on the cake to our already amazing community.

Thursdays on Main kicked off the season last night.  Downtown was a flurry of activity as people enjoyed the activities, vendors, food and live music.  After a long winter, it warms my heart to see our community come out and support this incredible event.  The new strider bike course is definitely a fan favorite!

And now, as we sail into the first weekend in June, Clear Lake is full speed ahead on summer fun.

Central Gardens starts their Fresh on Friday season with fun activities for the kiddos in the Bee Happy Garden on Friday morning.  The library is gearing up for the start of the summer reading program, story time and so many more programs.

Cerro Gordo Relay for Life will be held in City Park on Friday evening.  There will be a silent auction, kids’ activities, food vendors and a free concert by the Hepperly Band.  These days, it seems like cancer touches everyone’s life in some way.  This fundraiser is a great way to give back to an organization who strives to help those struggling with this awful disease.

Saturday morning, all the bendy people will venture down to the seawall at 7am for Yoga by the Lake.  This is for EVERY skill level, and you don’t have to register in advance.  Just sign up and pay the whopping $2 fee for the session.

When you’re done, pop on over to the Farmer’s Market in the Surf Ballroom parking lot.  It runs from 9am to noon and is SO much more than just vegetables!  Vendors of every realm are there with tables of items.  Oh, and the Legacy Grill now serves brunch during the event.  Yum!

This weekend (June 2-4) is also Free Fishing Weekend in Iowa.  The DNR will hold a free fishing clinic for kids at the Ventura Grade on Saturday morning at 8:30am.  The Clear Lake Fishing Club has their annual kids fishing tournament immediately following the clinic.  There will be food and prizes for all participants.  Check out all the details here.

Of course, all your favorite watering holes have live music lined up for you to enjoy.  They are just the best at making sure this town is hopping and bopping all weekend long.

Seems like a lot, right?  Well, that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

For the full schedule of events, you can check out our Weekly Event Email.  This is emailed out every Thursday.  If you’d like to be included on our email list, you can sign up here.

Hold on to your hats, my friends.  Summer in Clear Lake is going to be a whirlwind of fun.  Be sure to soak up every second of it!
