Spring is here!

Spring has officially arrived in Clear Lake, Iowa, and we have the ultimate sign to prove it—Ice-Out! On March 18, 2025, the last of the lake’s ice disappeared, marking the transition from winter’s chill to the promise of warmer days ahead.

While we’re still in the shoulder season leading up to summer, Ice-Out is a milestone that sparks anticipation for lake days, fishing, and outdoor adventures. But what exactly does Ice-Out mean, and why is it such a big deal for our lakeside community?

What is Ice-Out and How is It Measured?

“Ice-Out” is when the lake is completely free of ice. In Clear Lake, the Water Department Superintendent Adam Theiss holds the official responsibility of declaring both “Ice-In” (when the lake fully freezes) and “Ice-Out.” This determination is made through careful observation—once the lake is entirely free of ice with no large floating chunks remaining, Ice-Out is officially called.

It’s a significant moment for lake lovers, signaling the transition from ice fishing to open-water fishing, the return of boating, and the first glimpses of spring wildlife.
