On February 14, 2005, three former employees of the PayPal corporation ventured out on their own and created a website for sharing videos called YouTube. The first uploaded video features one of the cofounders, Jawed Karim, in an 18-second video in front of the elephants at the zoo.
A bit over a year later, the site surpassed 25 million users. More than 20,000 videos were being uploaded every day. Each month, the numbers escalated.
Drastically.
By the summer of 2006, YouTube was serving over 100 million videos per day.
Talk about a paradigm shift in the world, right? Suddenly the world became flooded with this new thing called “You Tubers.”
According to Wikipedia, “A YouTuber is an online personality or influencer who produces videos on the video-sharing platform YouTube, typically posting to their personal YouTube channel. The term was first used in the English language in 2006.”
In fact, it’s been said YouTube stars are now more influential than celebrities.
And some of these people are making the big bucks!
Creators earn about 55% of the revenue on their channels. That means for every $100 an advertiser pays, Google pays $55 to the creator. The average YouTuber makes about $0.18 per view or $18 per 1,000 views.
According to Google, the ten highest-earning YouTubers in 2021 collectively made about $300 million, up 40% from 2020.
Um. Okay.
Videos related to everything under the sun are posted every minute of every day. Most of the time, however, it’s the funny videos that garner the most attention. People doing crazy stunts or filming themselves in dangerous situations.
In Clear Lake, we are using the platform to showcase our incredible community and all it has to offer!
We’ve shared ribbon cuttings of new Chamber members, Quarterly Coffee events at the Surf Ballroom, and highlight reels of our fantastic events.
This one, produced by Renovo Media Group, has garnered 1.1 million views! In fact, I recently learned of someone who actually moved to Clear Lake because they saw this video. It piqued their interest and the next thing they knew; they had packed up and moved to North Iowa.
It’s the power of YouTube, people!
So how does one subscribe to our YouTube channel?
It’s easy!
Simply log onto the internet and go to https://www.youtube.com/@ClearLakeIowa
On the right side of the page is black box that says “subscribe.” All you have to do is point and click!
That’s it! There is no information to plug in. No money to be paid.
Wait, what?
That’s right, friends. SUBSCRIBING IS FREE!
Just one tiny little click and you’re off on a journey to paradise at the Lake!

While I don’t foresee us becoming ‘YouTube Famous’ any time soon, it is a great way to show the world what a wonderful slice of Heaven we have tucked away in the middle of Iowa.
