Exhibition: Adventurers by artist Jacqueline Fabritz
Artist Jacqueline Fabritz often reflects on the adventures of her childhood, cherishing the memories that shaped her early years. As an adult, she treasures creating new memories by introducing children to spontaneous adventures. Her current collection captures scenes and experiences one might encounter while vacationing, relaxing, or exploring the world. Through her art, Fabritz strives to evoke an upbeat, joyful energy, using bright colors, humor, and subjects inspired by nature—often with a sense of escape from the ordinary. Fabritz enjoys incorporating three-dimensional elements into her work. Experimentation with balsa wood led her to create shadow box displays. Combining carving tools with wood panels as a canvas inspired her to carve directly into the surface. These subtractive strokes bring definition and reflection, creating a look reminiscent of woodblock prints. With this presentation, Jacqueline Fabritz invites viewers to remember the simple, beautiful experiences of childhood and to find joy in sharing those same moments with new generations.
Exhibition is on display through October 11

Brave New World Book Club: The Grace Year
Dystopia is an imagined state or society in which there is great suffering or injustice. Usually these imagined states end up ominously reflective of our own society. The Grace Year by Kim Liggett: No one speaks of the grace year. It’s forbidden. In Garner County, girls are told they have the power to lure grown men from their beds, to drive women mad with jealousy. They believe their very skin emits a powerful aphrodisiac, the potent essence of youth, of a girl on the edge of womanhood. That’s why they’re banished for their sixteenth year, to release their magic into the wild so they can return purified and ready for marriage. But not all of them will make it home alive. Sixteen-year-old Tierney James dreams of a better life-a society that doesn’t pit friend against friend or woman against woman, but as her own grace year draws near, she quickly realizes that it’s not just the brutal elements they must fear. It’s not even the poachers in the woods, men who are waiting for a chance to grab one of the girls in order to make a fortune on the black market. Their greatest threat may very well be each other.

Book Chat: Don’t Know Tough
Book Chat meets on the third Tuesday of every month at 12:00 pm in the library meeting room. Don’t Know Tough by Eli Cranor: In Denton, Arkansas, the fate of the high school football team rests on the shoulders of Billy Lowe, a volatile but talented running back. Billy comes from an extremely troubled home: a trailer park where he is terrorized by his mother’s abusive boyfriend. Billy takes out his anger on the field, but when his savagery crosses a line, he faces suspension. Without Billy Lowe, the Denton Pirates can kiss their playoff bid goodbye. But the head coach, Trent Powers, who just moved from California with his wife and two children for this job, has more than just his paycheck riding on Billy’s bad behavior. As a born-again Christian, Trent feels a divine calling to save Billy—save him from his circumstances, and save his soul. Then Billy’s abuser is found murdered in the Lowe family trailer, and all evidence points toward Billy. Now nothing can stop an explosive chain of violence that could tear the whole town apart on the eve of the playoffs.
