Who can name that tune?  Anyone?  Anyone? Bueller?

A very odd man by the name of Bobby “Boris” Pickett released this famous song in 1962, causing ghosts and ghouls around the Nation to stand up and boogie.

For some reason, when my over-active brain woke me up at 2:30AM last night… THIS SONG played over and over and over on repeat.  It was awful, really, keeping me up for hours until I basically decided it needed to be a blog post to commemorate Halloween.

I was working in the lab

Late one night

When my eyes beheld

An Eerie sight

My monster from this Lab

Began to rise

And suddenly, to my surprise

He did the Mash – He did the Monster Mash

The Monster Mash – It was a Graveyard Smash

Catchy, right?  Also evil when trying to sleep.

But it did get me thinking about Halloween.  It’s never really been a favorite ‘holiday’ of mine, as I don’t so much get into the whole dressing up thing and whatnot.  But my kids love to pick out their costumes each year, depending on who their favorite action hero or princess is at the moment.

Except my 10 year old, who has deemed himself “over it” this year.

**Sigh**

So, according to the World Book Encyclopedia, the origin of Halloween can be traced to the ancient pagan festival called Samhain, which was celebrated by Celtic people over 2,000 years ago.  They believed this to be the one time each year that the dead could walk among the living.

Creepy.

And also, that the living could visit with the dead.

Even creepier.

Now days, while there are those who love the thrill of an incredibly scary movie and the theatrics associated with dressing up and such – it’s mostly about wearing a fun costume and cruising the streets with your friends whilst receiving hordes of candy.

That mom likely throws out after a week.

This year, be sure to stock your candy bowl full of sugary goodness, as the children and teens of Clear Lake will descend upon your doors on Wednesday night.  Trick-or-treating runs from 5:30-7:30PM, so keep your eyes peeled for these creatively-dressed munchkins.

Incidentally, if you happen to be driving on any of the streets in Clear Lake during these hours, be on the lookout and extra cautious.  We want all our youngsters and adults to have a SAFE and FUN Halloween.
