Hallelujah for random, oddball days that give me interesting material to write about!  I mean, I can be pretty windy about anything, but this just makes life more fun.

Today is Pi Day, an annual date of celebration in the mathematical community because March 14th is commonly written as 3/14, which looks strikingly similar to 3.14, the common rounded number for Pi.

For your lesson today, let’s learn about Pi.  It’s often referred to as the Greek symbol   and is used in mathematics to represent a constant – the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter – which is approximately 3.14159.

Riveting information, right?

Pi has been calculated to over a trillion digits beyond its decimal point.  The current record for vocal repetition of the number goes out one hundred thousand digits past the decimal point.  That means, some dude memorized one hundred thousand digits.

For real.

Meanwhile, at my house, I can’t remember what I did yesterday.

And you know what… there’s no good way to really celebrate Pi.  I mean, math, ugh.  So how ‘bout we talk about my favorite type of “pi” – the kind full of sugar with a great big spoonful of whipped cream on top.

PIE!!!

Mmm… delicious.

Thankfully, in Clear Lake you can find a heavenly slice of sweet or savory delight at a variety of places.  Of course, Perkins has been known forever as being the place for pie.  Slices, whole pies, they have it all.  But did you know you can also get a slice at Seven Stars Family Restaurant?  Or Backyard Deli?  Yup, they’ll hook you up with some homemade goodness as well.  And then there’s Bread & Buttercreme, where you can take your slice of pie like grandma used to make out to the patio as the weather gets warmer.

And then yesterday, as I was killing some time scrolling through Facebook, I see a post from our friends at the South Shore Donut Company about a new donut they’re introducing this week.  I instantly thought maybe it was something concerning St. Patty’s Day, but was SO pumped to find out they’ve come up with a new Cherry Pie donut for Pi Day.

YUM!!

It’s a vanilla donut with vanilla buttercream, a big dollop of cherry pie filling dusted with graham cracker crust.

You guys… this is like fall-down deliciousness.

But for those of you who don’t have a sweet tooth… never fear… you can still celebrate pi day with a Pizza Pie instead.

Overload on cheese at the OP.  Have a slice of authentic Italian awesomeness at Ge-Jo’s.  And for the lazy celebrator, Casey’s (by the OP) or Papa Everett’s will bring a steaming, hot pizza pie right to your door.

And there you have it, nice how I turned a mathematical celebration into something about food, right?  Enjoy your PI Day, Clear Lakers!!
