Clear Lake, Iowa — The Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is disappointed to announce that the Color the Wind Kite Festival, scheduled for Feb. 17, has been canceled due to deteriorating ice conditions.

Consistent above average winter temperatures in recent weeks have made the ice unsafe to host the extraordinary winter festival that drew nearly 20,000 people to Clear Lake last year. Next year’s event will be Feb. 15, 2025.

The festival showcases an awe-inspiring collection of gigantic inflatable kites masterfully flown by dedicated kite enthusiasts from all corners of the United States.

“While we are disappointed by the cancellation of our 2024 Color the Wind Kite Festival, we want to remind visitors of the other wonderful experiences Clear Lake has to offer. The festival is a cherished event, but it’s just one of many reasons to visit our vibrant town,” said Stacy Doughan, Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO. “We encourage everyone to explore the historic Surf Ballroom, immerse yourself in our lively music scene, discover unique shopping options, and enjoy local restaurants. These activities not only offer memorable experiences but also provide vital support to our businesses, especially during the winter season. Clear Lake is a destination full of history and alive with opportunity, regardless of the season, and we look forward to welcoming you.”

Color the Wind is made possible thanks to the generosity of numerous local sponsors.

The festival was started in 2001 by Larry and Kay Day of Clear Lake, and the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce took over the event in 2022 with guidance from the Days.

In the kite festival’s history, it’s been canceled twice due to deteriorating ice conditions, once in 2013 and the other in 2017.

The Color the Wind Kite Festival is one of the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual signature events. The others are Earth Day, TRI Clear Lake, Thursdays on Main, July 4th Celebration, Harvest Festival and Christmas by the Lake.

The Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit membership organization that’s mission is to be the champion for business success and quality of life, creating a thriving destination and driving community prosperity. It has 475 members.
