Orange and Yellow and Red – Oh my!
BY: RACHEL WUMKES
There are countless articles and books floating around the universe related to taking the time to slow down and enjoy life. I personally must remind myself at least twice a week to do just that.
This morning was one of those times.
While on my jog in the wee hours of this beautiful day, I came upon a tree. I’ve gone by it several times this season but never noticed it until this morning. While during the summer months it sports a lush thickness of leaves a shade of vibrant green, it’s taken on the hues of fall in full force.
Orange. Yellow. Red.
Colors so bold and brilliant I could still see them in all their dazzling beauty, even with very little sunlight coming across the horizon.
It made me think. You may have noticed the lack of community blog posts lately as I’ve been focused on creating content for the 2023 Visitor Guide. I never even realized that I’ve been consumed with writing all the words ABOUT Clear Lake, but not taking the time to ENJOY Clear Lake.
Something inside me seemed to shift. To morph into a moment of clarity. During the remainder of my jog, I became hyper aware of my surroundings. Of the small squirrel carrying a nut, preparing his stash for the upcoming winter months. Of a woman enjoying a steamy cup of coffee on her front deck.
When I got downtown, I was simply overwhelmed.
At the water’s edge, where just a few months ago my children laughed and played and splashed on a hot summer day, it was still. The sun had risen high enough by that point, its rays bounced across the surface, creating a shimmering glow. City Park was calm, except for the occasional leaf floating from the treetop down onto the ground.
It became clear how easily we get wrapped up in all the happenings of our lives, we forget to take the time to let it sink in.
We live in the most beautiful community.
And honestly, it’s not just the vibrant colors of the leaves or the way the water calms my soul. It’s the people. It’s the City officials who work so diligently to ensure progress and growth. The faculty and staff at our schools who give everything they’ve got to their students. It’s the way people come out in droves to our community events, supporting local business and creating an economical boost for the greater good of the community.
And so… this is my challenge to you for the remainder of the week. Take the time to let it sink in. Enjoy all that Clear Lake has to offer during this gorgeous season as we prepare for the winter. Let yourself slow down and absorb the beauty of this incredible Midwest community.
