We are almost halfway through the frigid month of February. Hallelujah! This past week has been a doozy at the Lake. In all of North Iowa, really. I understand the bitter chill of winter can be brutal given where we live and all, but we need a bit of a break… it’s Iowa, not the Arctic!
This below zero business is for the birds.
On the plus side, it has been beneficial in creating a very sturdy, extra-thick layer of ice upon our frozen tundra. Just in time for all the winter fun to happen this weekend at the Lake!
For the frozen anglers out there, the Yellow Bass Bonanza is sure to bring a bit of heat to your weekend. When the event kicked off in 2013, there was no way to predict its popularity would spike so quickly, as it is now one of the Midwest’s premier ice fishing tournaments. With hundreds upon hundreds of people registered, it’s going to be a great weekend to be out on the ice.
While that is happening on and around the little lake, on the opposite side, near State Park, the Midwest Sled Fest will hit the ice for a day of outdoor winter fun. Started years ago as the Jack Races, this event is for a range of snowmobile enthusiasts. You will see everything from vintage sleds to the most current, high-tech ones and everything in between. Events range from LeMans races, radar runs, a vintage show, and kid’s classes for Kitty Cat, 120, 200 and Snow Scoot racing.
Whether you ride your snowmobile to the Lake or drive a car, it will be an exciting day out on the ice for everyone! But be sure to bundle up, because Old Man Winter is looking to blow a steady stream of Arctic air across our region on Saturday. Concessions will be available throughout the day, and there is a post-race party downtown at Tap’d.
After a year of cancellations and postponements, it’s exciting to have not one, but two awesome events out on the Lake this weekend.
In warmer, indoor news, tonight is the first opportunity to pack the gym for a home basketball game this season. Please be sure to adhere to all mandates put into place by the school district for this event. If you are unsure, https://www.clearlakeschools.org/2021/02/10/new-guidelines-for-events/ will get you up to speed!
Thanks for another amazing week at the Lake, my friends. I hope you each have a wonderful, safe, and WARM weekend!
