Winter is a magical time in North Iowa, and the setting for some pretty major events.  Here’s a list of must-see events!

  1. Winter Dance Party. The annual tribute to the lives and legacies of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and JP “The Big Bopper” Richardson continues to commemorate their final concert in Clear Lake on February 2, 1959. February 3-6, 2016. Artists scheduled to appear include the Crickets, Ricky Nelson Remembered featuring Matthew & Gunnar Nelson, Wanda Jackson, Jason D.   2. The Jack Race. This isn’t your average snowmobile race! Held in conjunction with the Antique Snowmobile Club of America, the races combine family fun and the great outdoors with races for all ages. Bundle up, browse the vintage sled show, and watch some exciting radar runs, 120, and kitty kat races at Clear Lake State Park. February 12-13, 2016. thejackrace.com
  3. Yellow Bass Bonanza. One of the largest fishing tournaments in the Midwest with thousands in dollars in cash and prizes, this hardwater tournament brings anglers from across the nation. February 13-14, 2016. yellowbassbonanza.com
  4. Color the Wind Kite Festival. The Midwest’s largest and most colorful winter kite festival features huge inflatable kites flown on the ice downtown by the seawall. A special art show and sale will be held at the Clear Lake Arts Center in conjunction with the festival. February 20, 2016. colorthewind.org
