Once upon a time, many years ago (well… about 27 years ago) in the faraway land of Sweden, a storytelling day was held. The excitement of the event soon spread like wildfire around the Globe and today, each year on the Spring Equinox, we celebrate World Storytelling Day on an international level.
The general concept of World Storytelling Day is to have as many people as possible tell and listen to stories in as many languages and places as possible on the same day. Oral storytelling is a unique art. One that requires a bit of theatrical flare. In fact, our own Clear Lake Library will host the Storytelling Event in City Park on July 28th (more to come about that this summer!)
Now, we all know a storyteller of some shape and form in our lives. I mean, there’s a group of older gentleman that get together every morning at Casey’s for coffee. I reckon a few stories are told. And stories, in general, come in all shapes and sizes.
Many of you may not know this, but I am a published author. While I started my writing journey in the world of steamy romance, I have recently ventured into the enchanted land of children’s books. During the summer of 2016, my son, Kamden, and I began working on a story about a clam that lived in the pond in our backyard. And last March, Calvin the Grumpy Clam was released! In just a few short weeks our follow up book, Teddy the Careless Turtle will hit the shelves!
My love for writing connected me with a duo of book bloggers in Mason City called BF Bookies. After I got on board, we decided to host a book signing event at the Best Western in Clear Lake.
What started as a small group of local authors coming together to talk books and share with the public has grown into a massive event, dubbed North Iowa Book Bash, that hosts over 50 authors from all around the United States. In fact, we have one author coming this year all the way from Australia.
She’s coming to Clear Lake. To Book Bash. From AUSTRALIA. Eeeep!
Over the years, most people that walk into Book Bash get to my table with wide eyes and say, “Holy cow, I didn’t realize this is what a book signing was like!” Yup! It’s jam-packed with books, swag, and a bunch of crazy writers who love to talk books!
For a bonefide book nerd like myself, the North Iowa Book Bash is one of the best days of the year. For the average reader coming to Book Bash here’s my suggestion to avoid being totally overwhelmed: Take a pass around the room and check out all the authors. Say hello. Ask them what they write. There are a lot of really amazing writers out there whose stories will just blow you away. Then go back through and make your purchases.
North Iowa Book Bash will be held on Saturday, April 7th. General Admission is open from 1-4pm and the first 100 people through the doors get a cloth goody bag filled with some awesome stuff. Also throughout the day, we will be giving away a total of 5 Kindle Fires, Amazon gift cards, and a Grand Prize basket valued at over $250.
For more information, I suggest you find North Iowa Book Bash on Facebook. VIP Tickets are completely sold out (yay!) but General Admission is only $2 in advance and $4 at the door. Just go to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/north-iowa-book-bash-tickets-38955466850?aff=ehomecard
See you at the Lake, book worms!
